![]() ![]() ![]() Hiroshima was one of the few places in the world to experience the destruction and fallout of a nuclear weapon.The nuclear bomb was dropped by the United States Army Air Force 71 years ago resulting in the deaths of more than 60,000 people. Hiroshima is a well-known city in the history of humankind for more sobering reasons. Hiroshima is a historical city whilst Biak is a scenic island. While Biak is one of the regencies in West Papua Province of Indonesia, whose population is 156,023 people (2014). ![]() Hiroshima is an island located in the southwestern part of the Japanese islands and home to 1,196,067 people (2016). To get the ball rolling, let me give you a bit of a geographical background of these two regions. ![]() This article also aims to highlight the interesting parallels seen between Hiroshima and Biak. Perhaps most notably, there may be great potential for insights which can be derived from third party accounts such as the stories of people from Biak. However, there are some interesting insights which can be gained from focusing on the stories of those who were defeated. We often remember history from the perspectives of the victors of war. While it is true that Japanese people were also committing atrocities upon indigenous Biakat the time of war, this story focuses entirely on the alternative side of history.
